Decisions, decisions
I have been told that a macrobiotic/vegetarian diet could greatly improve my health. According to some, the improvements may even reverse some of the effects that this illness - and the medications - have had on me.
Yet I struggle.
Why? I rarely eat fish, I do not care for pork, and I require a designated driver in order to consume steak. (I am SO not kidding, people.) I eat chicken from time to time, and actually LIKE it.
Yet that is still not the reason.
I love many vegetarian foods. I could almost live on hummus, pita bread, heck - even TVP is pretty good. I just can't take that final step.
I can not say "I am a vegetarian". Every time I even think it, that frigging Mary Moon (true title: New Age Girl) song flies into my head. It nearly drives me crazy.
Sing it with me, people: "Mary Mooooon, she's a vegetarian..."
Enjoy the ear worm.
(I'm not linking the song here, as the lyrics are AWFUL. The band name isn't much better...)

I am either so or or so out of it that I have absoluetly no idea what song you mention here. So I am safe from THAT ear worm, anyway. I'll probably have to look it up.
I spent years working in the natural foods area, growing organically and selling , etc. I only made it about 3/4 of a year (for just a few years) as a true vegetarian as Thanksgiving would roll around, I'd go home for the holiday, and there would be my mom's aromatic, juicy, turkey and dressing and gravy on the table. I gave in every time, which would blow my act through New Year's. Then I'd start over.
A good friend of mine is a macrobiotics teacher and she swears by its healing power. One issue I'd have, if I understand it correctly, is the avoidance of tomatoes and potatoes (and eggplant, easier) - all the nightshades. Those are said to aggravate arthritis. After you cut out meats AND the nightshades, I'm feeling a bit anxious, but to lose pain, it might be worth a try.
Dude. You seemed to answer your question: don't label yourself anything, and eat the way you think is most healthy.
Screw the labels.
Oh, I've heard that nightshades are terrible for psoriasis, which has some relation to arthritis.
Hmmm.
When R. decided she was a "vegetabletarian" I wnt down to the store and bought a bunch of Chinese BBQ pork with hot mustard and sesame seeds. End of phase.
Nothing says you have to say you are a vegetarian...
Just tell people you are a picky eater! :)
Might be worth a shot, or worth NOT getting shots, if you get my drift.
Still, it's a huge commitment, and I'm thinking that Dream Burger doesn't not fall under the "macrobiotic" umbrella.
Hmm, nightshades aggravate auto-immune diseases? That's interesting!
A friend of mine is unable to eat anything of the nightshade variety, or her joints swell up like water balloons.
I myself could never be a vegetarian. I just hate animals too much.
No, wait. I was just kidding. I love animals. Especially covered in gravy or barbecue sauce.
Eating a fresh slab of cooked animal is good for you occasionally, I'm convinced.
Also, I know I am behind the times, but why would anyone want to eat a nightshade? Surely that CAN'T be good for one's health.
All God's Creatures- FRESH OFF THE GRILL as the song says.
You know, it's not so black and whit, dear. There are varieties of vegetarian, and I promise to support you in any of them except veganism. Those fuckers are crazy.
Ooooh, it's not vegetarianism, it's a RESTRICTED DIET! From the DOCTOR!
Semantics are your friend.
We have to go to Dream Burger at least one more time if you decide to become a vegetarian!
The only thing I've ever heard about psoriasis (and I am not sure if it was the type you have) is that you should never eat tomatoes, as the acid in them is bad for that.
I was a vegetarian for about six years or so (now I eat fish). My only advice is to learn to cook a variety of tasty vegetarian dishes. I relied too much on Tofu Pups and frozen veggie burgers, which got pretty boring after a while.
I was a vegetarian for about 9 years and it was okay. I don't think I could do vegan or macrobiotic, though. The only food I really missed in all that time was tacos (somehow, made with tofu, they just aren't the same).
