The Nooze

My baby has had quite a year this year.  She's in the 5th grade, preparing to make that big step to middle school.  In just a few months, she will become an official Tween, a 6th grader, a BUS RIDER...and a latch key kid.  To say that I am anxious about any (or ALL!) of these would be an understatement.

Nooze is growing fast, y'all.  I don't mean just in the 'she was two just yesterday' sense, either.  At age eleven, Nooze is almost my height...5'4"...1/2.  If the past 4 months are any indication, she will become taller than I am by the end of summer.  Thankfully, we have friends with kids...in their 20s.  Nooze has received hand me downs from older friends, college students...and even one of her former teachers! (Her 3rd grade teacher may be part Sprite...)

She's growing in other ways, too.  She reads at an 11th grade level.  She wants to start taking a babysitting class.  She's a member of the school Show Choir.  She wants to take band next year.  [Does anyone know where we can buy an inexpensive flute?] She frequently donates to charitable causes - especially local and foreign missions - or anything involving animals.  She is also a near rabid supporter of groups that raise funds to fight cancer and heart disease, doing so in memory of my Mum.  I find that pretty cool.

In short, this is my brag time.  I'm nervous about the changes to be made, but I'm not afraid.  My sweet baby, whether I like it or not, is growing up right in front of my eyes.

I [almost] can't wait to see what comes next.

I know how you feel. It is one of the great joys of parenthood; watching them grow and seeing what kind of people they become. She will be terrific, I'm sure. Just look who her parents are!!

Buddy is my height (near 5 foot 9) and is 14. He has been walking home from school since last year (7th grade). We only live half a mile from his school and he walks with friends. We gave him his own key last year. I have to pick up Sissy around the same time he comes home, so he is either ahead of us by about 10 minutes or a bit later than us.

I still worry...We gotta give them wings and let the good parenting we've instilled give them a sense of accomplishment. {{Hugs, momma}}. I feel your anxiety, but I bet - 100% - she will be A-OK. :-)

Mama bear - I feel ya. Love the who she is now, and be prepared to celebrate who she is becoming.

And buy her a trumpet. Seriously.

It totally sounds like you're raising her right. What a good kid.

oh MY...Nooze and Hannah are practically polar opposites. She is TINY (just measured her at 4'6 1/2"...at 11 1/2 years old)...she is NOT in show choir, nor does she participate in anything remotely resembling or requiring voice (drama, singing, etc)...at least not willingly, lol!

BUT...she reads at the same level as Nooze, and plays flute (started in a morning program here, and will continue with full time band in middle school). We got her flute from Craigslist for about $100...decent price for a student flute.

One day soon, we will head up to your little corner of the world. Hannah's used to being dwarfed by all the other tall kids, lol!
