I (heart) Nerds

I should have taken my first crush as an omen. I was sixteen years old, and my crush was on Tom Brokaw. He was smart, well spoken, tall, and had a wonderful voice. Each night, from 6:30 to 7, he ruled my world. My friends, all mad with crushes on Tom Cruise or Jon Bon Jovi, were convinced that I had lost my mind.

"Renn", they would sigh. "Tom Brokaw is, like, old. He's like, I mean, ewww." I would not be dissuaded. I was hooked. In the process, I came to learn something very important: A pretty face means little if there is nothing behind it. So began my quest to find the perfect nerd.

As no plan is every truly perfect, I hit some bumps along the way. While in college, I fell for a rich boy, a frat boy, a gay boy; my crushes ran the gamut from cowboy to PETAhead.

My taste in men was so bizarre that my friend Janine came to call me The Leftover Queen. According to her, you could line up 100 men from any remote corner of the world; Renn would consistently choose the ONE guy that no one else would ever possibly want.

I took that as a compliment.

Late in my sophomore year, I met the guy. I thought. He was tall, smart, funny...and WEIRD. He was the kind of guy that you could be friends with or date. In short, he was nice. We dated off and on for about two years, never quite making it to the point of 'serious'. In the end, he found his true love in a girl just as nice as he; they now live in a DC area condo with a passel of kids. [ I should probably mention that he was 6'6" and dressed like a pirate.]

After years of research, I finally settled down. I'll be honest; it didn't happen in the way I had planned. I moved south to NC one year after college graduation. Journalistic opportunities were next to impossible in Parkersburg, WV; I was working as a bartender in a dive joint that forced me to dress as a gas attendant.

It all started when Chachi called.

to be continued...

I am awaiting Part II also. I have some seriously strange taste in men too. (That's why my heart is "Closed for Business" until further notice!)

Ren - Adam can have my babies any ol' day of the week....wotta hunk.

I LOVE me some geek guys too. If I'd marreid one that played as many computer games as I do, then life would indeed be very good. \

Yay! There's going to be a part 2!

Mark,

It would seem that 3 out of 4 of us are in North Carolina, somewhere between the Triangle (BL and TIff) and the Sandhills (me).

Wordnerd is in LA.

Renn, sorry to get off subject, but I had to continue our short conversation about Molunkus over on the WVSR.

Did you know the Harris family, who owned Harry's lodge for a while? That's where I stayed when I was there.

Sponge-

I am not familiar with the Harris family. Did you go to school there, or were you visiting?

I had my share of weirdos! 6'6 and dressed like a pirate? Delicious! I love me some strange.

Not STRAAAANGE, but strange. Different. I had a guy who enjoyed stalking me at work (shoe store) while wearing a black trench coat and a beret, making my boss think he was a french terrorist. It didn't work out. But it was fun.

No renn, I was more or less goofing off. I lived at Harry's lodge (do you know it?) for five months, then moved to the Sugarloaf ski area for four more months.

When in Molunkus I was there for the hunting. That was great. Coming from New Jersey hunting where there was someone behind every tree, to Maine where I could wander in the woods for two weeks and not see another person.

Have you ever been to Sugarloaf?

I am not familiar with Harry's Lodge, nor have I been to Sugarloaf. I did all of my skiing in Lee, and I generally went to Bar Harbor, NH or NB, Canada for camping/vacations.

I have always like the "different" guy. But I've never met one that dressed like a pirate.

My some Matthew calls my 3 year old Chachi. He didn't call you, did he?

I don't think so. Do you call your son 'Eddie Munster' when he desperately needs a haircut?
