Respite

I never imagined that taking a day off in order to visit the doctor would be a vacation. Granted, I am not the patient being seen, nor have I been relatively housebound for the past three weeks. Regardless, today is kind of a nice break for me.

See, Destrukto is going through some rather tough times. Many branches have closed outright, while others are laying people off in droves. My office happens to be one of the latter. Last year, my office had somewhere around 50 employees. Today, we have less than twenty. That's a fast track downhill, guys.

As a result, I am facing the very real possibility of being laid off myself. I am realistic about it, but it's still difficult. I have been employed by Destrukto for nine years now. Time to dust off and update the resume, I suppose.

Last Friday was the latest round of layoffs in my office, and we lost two people. One was an employee of mine, the other was one of my best friends in the world. It was a rather bad day for all of us. While my friend took it well, my employee did not.

They say that our true character shows through during times of stress. This was true on Friday. My friend quietly cleaned out her office, hugged me, and told me she'd see me over the weekend. My employee proceeded to verbally trash me - not just during the layoff - but over the phone to other co-workers and builders all weekend long. Suffice it to say, her RTW (*Return To Work) status has been revoked. As one of my co-workers observed, "This is what a burning bridge looks like".

I left the office Friday mentally exhausted - one hour and a half later than normal. I traveled home parallel to a tornado, briefly hoping that the twister would head eastward and just take me out of my misery. I arrived home at seven pm...

...And was greeted at the door by my Beloved. He had my dinner (freshly microwaved) on the table...and the house was CLEAN. Everything had been dusted, mopped, washed, straightened. Candles were lit throughout the house (power loss was a possibility, people). I exhaled, smiled, and hugged him. Thus began a rather nice weekend. For Me.

Chachi, on the other hand, physically paid for all of that cleaning. See, he's still recovering from the surgery, and isn't supposed to 'aggravate' his arms/back with repetitive motions. In order to make my awful day better, he really 'took one for the team'.

I went in to work yesterday expecting the worst. Many people both in my office AND among the builders are protective of my (former) employee; I expected much screaming, demanding, and yea, gnashing of teeth.

Instead, I was greeted quietly by all office and field personnel. They approached my office one by one, formally offering to be of assistance in any way possible. Spazz and I accomplished a lot yesterday, but there is more work to be done. A LOT more.

Hopefully enough to issue an RTW on the other person that was laid off.

Hopefully.

Chachi did all that, risking injury? Boy is HE a keeper (but you knew that, didn't you?)

I hope the work front smoothes out soon. Times are tough all over.

I'm sorry to hear about the job worries. That stinks. But, Chachi is a real peach for stepping up and helping to make your weekend nice! :-) Hang in there, hon.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.
And yes, Chachi is a darling to do all that. There's no better feeling in the world than coming home to something like that after a bad day.

Renn,

Sounds like a very rough time. And the silver lining is definately that Chachi! mmmm mmmmm mmmmm. Hope you showed him how appreciative you were.... after you rested up a bit, of course. ;-)

I'll keep you in my prayers.

WTG Chachi!

And you, you longsuffering Destrukto employee, continue to handle the truckloads of crap with style and grace. Here's hoping Destrukto rises again - or you get recruited by a better company before the ship you're on sinks.

So sorry about the work situation. Hopefully, everyone can hold out a little while longer and the markets will open again. Chachi needs to be careful, but you know that. You are lucky to have someone like him.

I've had to be the person that handed out layoffs before and it is a very hard thing to to if you have any humanity at all. Even though it isn't personal to you, it is VERY personal to the person getting layed off.

All - Yes, Chachi is a dream. He'll be an even better dream now that he's been cleared to drive again!

Al - I have been laid off/outsourced/downsized/rightsized many times myself, so I know the drill. It sucks no matter WHICH side of the desk you're sitting on. All said, however, this is not an excuse to trash someone who has worked hard to make sure that you stayed employed through difficult circumstances. I also didn't make the choice; it came from corporate.

Your employee is, apparently, better off gone. Someone who would act that way is short-sighted. Sure, she's disappointed, but to blame YOU? Idiotic.

Be strong, friend. I have my fingers crossed for the continuance of YOUR employment.

What Chachi did right there? That's love! Good for him and for you!

And good luck in the office, both with dealing with the fall out and with your job and resume. Hope there aren't too many future layoffs, but if there are, that they go more smoothly.

And feel free to pass on that story if future employers call you about past employee!

Aw, how sweet of Chachi! Even though he needs a nose bopping for over exertion :)

That sucks about work. Sorry, sorry.

Nice post. I am currently going through the same thing. I expect the hammer to fall anytime. It seems my company is going after management right now. Which means me. I'm stuck in middle management also. So I feel like I have a target on my back. Which sucks.

Hi, Renn. I haven't been around in a while, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your terrible day, but am so happy you had such a lovely gift waiting for you at home. You deserve it.

Hope this week is much better.
