Northern Fare
In the interest of fair play, I have scoured my mind for popular foods used in the north. While I am aware that many of these items are also available locally, they are generally used for entirely different reasons. My primary example of this would be Fluff. In the south, it is merely an ingredient in some sort of high end, delectible fudge. Many nervous breakdowns have occurred due to its difficulty. In the north, however, we slather it on bread with peanut butter. Problem solved.
My next choice is probably less obvious. While available in higher end markets in the south as a 'delicacy', Moxie is the RC Cola of the north. It was created in a lab. By accident. If I remember correctly, the scientists were trying to make cough syrup of some kind. I miss the stuff terribly, but it is a hit or miss type of drink. You love it or hate it; there is no middle ground. I happen to love it.
I also miss Country Kitchen Donuts. While no Krispy Creme or Dunkin' Donuts, these are boxed in groups of 6, with each donut sealed in its own pouch. I spent many mornings in high school chowing these down with a large glass of milk. The chocolate powdered donuts are espeically good.
It is obvious that the above three choices are personal favorites; they are all hits in my book. The next items are foods that still invoke gags and nausea when I think about them. I haven't lived in the northeast for about 17 years.
Fiddleheads. These are baby ferns. THAT GROW BY THE POLLUTED RIVER. I can't think about them without inevitably turning my thoughts to this.
Olive Loaf, Pimento Loaf and Macaroni and Cheese Loaf. Ick, ick and ick! A trifecta of horror. Throw immediately into File 13, under 'bastard children of bologna'.
So there you have it. North vs. South according to Rennratt. Do you have regional hits and misses that you would like to share with the rest of us?

Oh MY! You've hit a nerve with Country Kitchen Donuts. My mom lives in Lewiston, where there's a Country Kitchen factory just down the street. MISS those! And fluff...well, it's a staple in my house. The kids love it, the hubby thinks I'm nuts (his mom uses "marshmallow creme" for fudge).
You missed my favorites - Bismarck donuts (filled creme and jelly donuts - have a HARD time to find them up north now) and Humpty Dumpty anything! BBQ is my all time favorite.
Keddyj mentioned Whoopie Pies...I have one in my freezer, from Lewiston, ME, that my mom sent me. There's a local pizza chain there that makes them, they're huge and heavenly, AND they shipped pretty well (in a solid container).
Thanks for visiting my blog, and for adding me to your blog roll! You're going on mine too...any one from Maine MUST be a friend...and now I'm checking Keddy J out!
I'm still trying to figure out who thought, "let's add clam juice to tomatoe juice and call it a beverage!" (Clamato, in case you want to look it up ;)
Hey renn, what about scrapple? A northeastern food that invokes wretching in some... I love it!
Sponge
Well now, we still have bismarcks in our local Dunkin Donuts and Renn, I would be happy to ship you some donuts if you would like. I am in Massachusetts but we still get them puppies here. I LOVE Peter Pan whipped peanut butter that you can only get in certain stores in the south -- Kroger I think -- very WW friendly and yummy.
"Fluff" brought back memories of 5th grade, when a new friend moved waaaaaaaaay down here from Massachusetts (but had grown up in Maine). I was invited over to her house one day, and her mom made us peanut butter, Fluff, and orange marmalade sandwiches... Freakiest thing ever to me back then.
Fiddleheads must have SEEMED like such a good idea to someone. Kind of live the "liver pudding" I've seen advertised down here.
(shudder)
Where are you shopping for the fluff? I always bought big jars in the stores in Ga with no problem. Moving to this part of Va? It is no longer what one would call the south! No Duke's mayonnaise! The Horror!!
BTW, check super walmart for the fluff.
One of my fondest memories is visiting Atlantic City with a friend of mine. We went for breakfast in one of the hotels and I started saying real loud "They don't have any GRITS here!"
My friend was dying.
Even though I am originally from Western Montana, I would have to say Idaho Spud candy bars.
mmmmmm.....
